Exhaust Venus
The traffic of Rome creates an air pollution problem that is not only a threat to the health of inhabitants, but it is also causing the city's monuments and archaeological treasures to rapidly deteriorate. Venus is used in this series as a symbol of the history, beauty, and grandeur typically associated with Rome. To create this series, masking fluid was used to paint various images of the goddess Venus onto sheets of watercolor paper. The papers were then left in a tunnel in Rome and exposed to heavy traffic for fourteen days. The masking fluid was then removed revealing the contrast between the portion it preserved and the areas darkened by exhaust fumes. This series demonstrates how the air pollution of Rome is so excessive that it can actually be used as a medium to create an image of the the beauty it is destroying.
